Poinsett County was named after Joel R.
Poinsett, who was a secretary of war under President Van Buren. He was
also a horticulturist and is remembered for his introduction of the
"poinsettia" flower to America. Ironically,
Joel Poinsett never visited Poinsett County.

When Poinsett County was established in 1838, William Harris was named
the first county judge. His home served as the first county meeting
place until a permanent county seat could be selected.

Even today while driving
through the small towns and rural countryside that characterize
Poinsett County, you can still observe the remains of Indian mounds,
old homesteads, cotton gins, commercial buildings and abandoned houses
that once were alive with people in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
